Have you ever heard about crudivorism? This term refers to a diet based on a «living» alimentation made from raw aliments from vegetal origin that have undergone no transformation. Is this very strict diet good for health? Can it trigger deficiencies and/or other side effects? FrenchSensations answers your questions.
More than a diet, crudivorism is a lifestyle based on a natural and living alimentation. At a time when industrial and animal products reign on the food industry, can crudivorism be considered a good alternative?
The basics of crudivorism
Crudivorism is based on one main principle: the human metabolism is aimed at eating raw food, like our ancestors and cousins (the apes) did. The goal of this type of alimentation is to stay fit and healthy longer and to prevent cancers, diabetes and cardio-vascular illnesses.
Crudivorism forbids the consumption of products from animal origin (milk, eggs, meat, etc) and advocates for the consumption of unaltered, raw aliments from organic agriculture. You can only eat aliments which underwent germination (like germinated seeds), or a fermentation (miso, kefir, etc). Even though it can seem limited, the crudivore diet encompasses a wide variety of products and possible combinations: vegetables, fruit, seeds, herbs, cereals, etc. Like vegetarianism and vegeanism, crudivorism is more a lifestyle than a simple diet.
The benefits of the crudivore diet
It’s been proven that crudivorism can have many positive effects on health:
Cooking destroys many nutrients and vitamins naturally present in aliments, especially in fruit and vegetables.
The absence of cooking reduces the risk of cancer.
Seed germination helps significantly raise the percentage of salt and minerals.
The suppression of saturated fats, notably present in meat, reduces the risk of cardio vascular illnesses.
Some researchers also tend to point out that cooked aliments require greater digestive effort, which can gradually weaken the body and favor the development of allergies and other pathologies. However, this theory still has to be proven. As for crudivores, they believe that their alimentation provides them with a sensation of well being on a daily basis.
Potential dangers
The main problem of such a diet is its nutritional deficiencies. While it’s possible to observe a crudivor diet without suffering any deficiencies, it requires a lot of attention and constant vigilence. If you want to follow a crudivore diet, you should make you know enough about how to maintain a balanced and complete diet and maybe go see a nutritionist who could help you understand how to master your needs. The main deficiency crudivors can be exposed to is lack of vitamin B 12. Present in great quantities in animal products, especially in meat, it is really hard to find in vegetal products. People who follow a crudivore diet often take nutritional supplements, rich in B 12 vitamin.
The crudivore diet isn’t good for pregnant women, children and teenagers who haven’t finished growing.
This diet can also trigger uncomfortable side effects. Because of its richness in fibers, crudivorism can trigger intestine irritations and thus sometimes pretty intense diarrhea.
